About the Founder

Dr. S.K. Sharma (Founder E.S.I)
The Environment Society of India was founded by Dr. S.K. Sharma in 1976. He is the driving force behind the Society and has dedicated his life to environmental awareness and conservation. While serving as an Assistant Director in the Government Health Department of Chandigarh, he voluntarily retired to fully commit himself to the cause of environmental education and activism.
Dr. Sharma selflessly contributed his pension, LIC maturity benefits, and other retirement funds towards the development and initiatives of the Environment Society of India, Chandigarh. His visionary approach led to several pioneering programs, many of which were the first of their kind:
- Developing environmental education in schools by designing a curriculum focused on ecological awareness.
- Launching the “School-1 Yojna”—a program encouraging every school to create a Nature Zone, which could include a water pond, nursery, vermicomposting unit, and forest exhibits.
- Introducing and institutionalizing the “Welcome & See-Off” of migratory birds at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh, fostering awareness about bird conservation.
- Securing approval for the Parrot Bird Sanctuary in Sector 21, Chandigarh, ensuring the protection of the city’s parrot population.
- Establishing a dedicated duck habitat in Sukhna Lake and working for its preservation.
- Promoting the plantation of religious and ecologically significant trees such as Peepal, Belpatra, Rudraksha, and others, reinforcing the spiritual and environmental connection.
- Ensuring the official nomination of ESI as the State Coordinator for the National Children’s Science Congress under the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
- Facilitating ESI’s role as a coordinator for grant approvals related to the National Environment Awareness Campaign in neighbouring states such as Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Through his relentless dedication, Dr. Sharma has left an indelible mark on environmental conservation in Chandigarh and beyond. His contributions continue to inspire and guide the Society in its mission to protect nature and educate future generations.
